The alfalfa fields of Triple J have been fruitful once again...after a summer of watching this buck grow and graze with our cows, Luke was counting down the days till opening day of deer season! Since gun season for deer is only a week long, and a giant mess of people flood neighboring ranches to hunt around our property, Luke knew if he wanted to be the one to harvest this buck...he was going to have to do so with a bow. Having a new baby and the insane amount of lawns Luke mowed this summer, it was going to be very tough to prepare for a bow hunt...so Jayme and I bought Dad a crossbow for father's day this year! (I got one too but we'll see if I have time to hunt anything with it!)
So opening day of archery season came and went with no sign of this buck, and since then Luke has returned each night empty handed. Finally last night, when Luke was about to give up the buck walked into the middle of the field seemingly out of nowhere! A single 50 yard shot with the crossbow, and it was all over...you couldn't ask for a better kill.
Luke proudly displays his first kill with his crossbow!
This is how Steve helped get the buck, which is still in velvet, safely to the taxidermist!
What a gorgeous 5x5! And we know he'll taste good too because he's been eating Triple J alfalfa!
Luke's very excited to have harvested this for his very first bow kill ever! Way to go Luke!
